Atria

α TrA in Triangulum Australe

Once ignited, 20% of its creator fees go to the Starlight Fund, which pays for a real telescope photo of Atria.

#42 brightest in our sky; really 103× Sun. If Atria replaced the Sun, its surface would reach past Mercury’s orbit. It looks modest only because it’s so far away (~390 ly). It’s a giant.

Atria and the Sun, true relative size. At this scale the Sun would be 0.89 px wide; the ring marks where it is.

Survey image. Digitized Sky Survey (DSS2) plate, 1° across, via CDS hips2fits. Bright stars bloom on photographic plates. Not a Starlight Fund observation.

Apparent magnitude: 1.91
Brightness rank: #42 brightest
Luminosity: 2,150× Sun
Width: 103× Sun
Surface temperature: 3900 K · K
Distance: 391 ly
Right ascension: 16h 49m
Declination: −69.0°

Sources: IAU WGSN name, HYG database, HIP 82273. Width is derived from luminosity and temperature, so it is approximate.
