Suhail

λ Vel in Vela

Once ignited, 20% of its creator fees go to the Starlight Fund, which pays for a real telescope photo of Suhail.

#68 brightest in our sky; really 147× Sun. If Suhail replaced the Sun, its surface would reach past Mercury’s orbit. It looks modest only because it’s so far away (~540 ly). It’s a giant.

Suhail and the Sun, true relative size. At this scale the Sun would be 0.63 px wide; the ring marks where it is.

Survey image. Digitized Sky Survey (DSS2) plate, 42′ across, via CDS hips2fits. Bright stars bloom on photographic plates. Not a Starlight Fund observation.

Apparent magnitude: 2.23
